Ancient Greece for Kids: A Captivating Guide to Greek History, from the Mycenean Civilization and the Trojan War through the Golden Age of Pericles to the Hellenistic Era and Roman Conquests
Please note: I was given a copy of this book and have voluntarily decided to give it this honest review。I am already a big fan of the history books by Captivating History and now they have come up with a new concept, books for children! The book is a paperback book, six inches wide, nine inches long, only a quarter inch thick, and 63 pages。 This makes the book easy to take anywhere。 It would be the perfect book to stick in the pocket in the back of the seat in the car for an instant activity to Please note: I was given a copy of this book and have voluntarily decided to give it this honest review。I am already a big fan of the history books by Captivating History and now they have come up with a new concept, books for children! There are books/magazines listed as well as web sites。 The tone of the book was very casual and friendly, yet I found it interesting to read too! I found out new things that I didn’t know about! I can see this book as a great way to introduce ancient history in an interesting, non-threatening way。 The reading level would depend upon the individual child, but I would think that it would be easy for a third grade reading level on up。 I also found that the author included little jokes within the book to make you smile! 。。。more
J,
This was a book that I had a chance to read as an ARC for Captivating History in physical copy instead of as a digital read。 What a great concept to not only make historical books geared for adults but also a much friendlier version for children who may be interested in history itself。 First of all since I don't have children myself I used my husband and cat as a captive audience while the cat just merrily snoozed her way through as is typical。 My husband, though, said that he gives the book th This was a book that I had a chance to read as an ARC for Captivating History in physical copy instead of as a digital read。 What a great concept to not only make historical books geared for adults but also a much friendlier version for children who may be interested in history itself。 First of all since I don't have children myself I used my husband and cat as a captive audience while the cat just merrily snoozed her way through as is typical。 My husband, though, said that he gives the book the rating that was provided as it helped him to understand Ancient Greece in a easy-to-grasp way while not overwhelming him although at times he also did wish there was more information than what was provided。 I must say that I was certainly pleased that the book covered so much Ancient Greek history from the Minoans/Mycenaean times to the conquest of Greece by Rome, which is usually much more than was ever provided by the books I grew up with。 At the same time the book itself helped provide the reader with comprehension exercises and activities to help readers better understand what they may have read after the end of each chapter。 And another thing I truly loved was the fact that the story did mention that sometimes learning about certain parts of Ancient Greek culture is hard even though we have the oral history and its many variations。 To hammer home the point they give a much cleaned up version of King Minos and the Minotaur while then explaining how certain facts may possibly be gleaned from such remaining literature as we have received from the mists of time。 The book although rather lengthy does include for some of the harder names a pronunciation guide as you go, highlights important words you may not know and also includes many colorful photographic inserts whether of actual artifacts, artwork, maps or even ruins to help the reader along。 Unfortunately the book does need a bit of a clean-up for there were words not submitted that broke-up a thought, missing punctuation or even random letters thrown in to throw away the flow。 Even with all of this I found the book informative and still a great historical read。 I most definitely would recommend to this any home teachers who may want to teach a broader definition of history to their children, to adults who may need a quick historical read or to even those students who may be learning about this Classic civilization in class。 **Please note I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review** 。。。more
Laura,
Wide-ranging synopsis of Ancient Greek history; very readable! This is a great introduction to Ancient Greek history for children, probably most appropriate for those in Middle School。 It interweaves key mythological figures as well as legend into the history of Ancient Greece, as it is often difficult to separate history from legend when it comes to Greek history。 It provides the key information about ancient wars, such as the Peloponnesian and Punic Wars and also includes brief biographical ske Wide-ranging synopsis of Ancient Greek history; very readable! This is a great introduction to Ancient Greek history for children, probably most appropriate for those in Middle School。 It interweaves key mythological figures as well as legend into the history of Ancient Greece, as it is often difficult to separate history from legend when it comes to Greek history。 It provides the key information about ancient wars, such as the Peloponnesian and Punic Wars and also includes brief biographical sketches of the most prominent historical figures of that time: Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, Euclid, Socrates, and a few others。At the end of each brief chapter is a quiz or learning activity that helps the reader to reflect upon the material covered to hone in to key dates and over highlight from that chapter。 I was provided this just-published book free of charge in order to have me submit a review。 The only reason I was unable to give it 5 stars is that the book contains multiple grammatical errors, such as subject and verb agreement in sentences, words that have been omitted, but that can be inferred from context, etc。 that should have been caught and corrected prior to publication。 。。。more

Ancient Greece For Kids is a wonderful tool to help students (I would suggest 5th grade to 10th grade) learn more about Ancient Greece。 From the Mycenean Era (remember the minotaur?) to Roman Conquests all of the major subjects are covered within these pages。 Maps, photographs and illustrations help to show what the material is about。 There are even exercises from vocabulary words to timeline quizzes that help strengthen the retention of the material。 The font seems suited for the material and a Ancient Greece For Kids is a wonderful tool to help students (I would suggest 5th grade to 10th grade) learn more about Ancient Greece。 From the Mycenean Era (remember the minotaur?) to Roman Conquests all of the major subjects are covered within these pages。 Maps, photographs and illustrations help to show what the material is about。 There are even exercises from vocabulary words to timeline quizzes that help strengthen the retention of the material。 The font seems suited for the material and at the end is a reference list to read if you want to learn certain things written about more in depth。 I highly recommend this book not only for people that are instructing their children at home, but also for those students that have a love for history and may have to do a project based upon the material above。 The book is very well made and looks nice on a shelf。 I received a copy of the paperback for free in exchange for an unbiased review。 。。。more
Beth Gibson,
The general content is good and interesting。 It is tagged to approximately a junior high age bracket and should be understandable to them。 I think it could have included pictures of the art and architecture developed by the Greeks, since they mentioned it several times。 The book is also riddled with typos and slang not appropriate to non fiction writing。 Just because this book is for kids, doesn't mean you don't owe it professional editing。 Also a few areas are spoken of as fact, when they are a The general content is good and interesting。 It is tagged to approximately a junior high age bracket and should be understandable to them。 I think it could have included pictures of the art and architecture developed by the Greeks, since they mentioned it several times。 The book is also riddled with typos and slang not appropriate to non fiction writing。 Just because this book is for kids, doesn't mean you don't owe it professional editing。 Also a few areas are spoken of as fact, when they are actually mythology。 For example, King Minos was probably a real person, but he was not half God, half man。 Either leave that out, or explain that "legend has it。。。" so kids are not confused。 Using only online sources is also a bad idea, since they change constantly, as well as cannot be verified for accuracy。 They should have used their own adult books on these topics, at a minimum, for their sources。 This would be laughed at by academia。 This series is a good concept。 I hope they continue it with better writers。 。。。more

A beautiful new line of CAPTIVATING HISTORY books has arrived and this one is spectacular。 As a former teacher of reluctant readers, this would be a hit with them!
